Alberto Abello Vives left us
With immense sadness we communicate the passing away, on Sunday, April 14th, of the intellectual from Santa Marta, Alberto Abello Vives.
Alberto opened the Event of the 44th Caribbean Studies Conference with his presentation: “What are we talking about when we talk about the Colombian Caribbean?” His paper sought to locate us within the complexity of the Colombian Caribbean; a region in a multi-regional country; with an extensive continental, insular and maritime territory; a Caribbean where the colonial phenomenon of the Antillean plantations did not occur; in which the multi-ethnic population is characterized by the weight of the population of African descent and hundreds of thousands of indigenous people who still express themselves in their own languages. In short, a Caribbean that confronted the colonial pact very early with the independence of Cartagena de Indias in 1811. All of these features explain and differentiate it from “other” Caribbeans.
Alberto was an economist, as well as an expert in Caribbean studies and culture. He graduated from the Master in Caribbean Studies, at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. He had an extensive career that included institutions such as the Observatory of the Colombian Caribbean, of which he was the first director. There he coordinated the magazine Aguaita and held the Caribbean Professorship. He was also part of the organization of the New Ibero-American Journalism Foundation, which García Márquez established in Cartagena to train the new journalists of the Continent. Then, as Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar, he organized the Culture and Development Laboratory, as well as a Master’s Degree in the same subject. He also organized the Padilla Expedition with the Colombian Navy and the Town Hall of Cartagena, to recognize the contributions of General José Padilla to the Colombian Caribbean Independence. He was the Director of the Luis Ángel Arango Library and the Banco de la República’s Library Network. Together with Mercedes Barcha, he obtained the donation for this Library of the collection of first editions of Gabriel García Márquez’s works published in different languages and countries.
Author and editor of books and magazines, among them “The island stranded”; “A Caribbean without plantation”, “The Caribbean in the Colombian nation”, “The Exiled from Paradise” and Aguaita, a magazine of the Colombian Caribbean Observatory. His research on carnivals and republican celebrations in the Colombian Caribbean is left unpublished. Alberto leaves us his ideas and books, as well as his enthusiasm whenever he undertook a project dedicated to Caribbean culture or studies.

Con inmensa tristeza comunicamos el fallecimiento, hoy Domingo, 14 de Abril, del intelectual samario Alberto Abello Vives. Alberto. Abria el Evento de la 44ava Conferencia de Estudios del Caribe con su ponencia: “De qué hablamos cuando hablamos de Caribe Colombiano?”
Su ponencia buscaba ubicar al asistente en la complejidad del Caribe colombiano; una región en un país multirregional; con un extenso territorio continental, insular y marítimo; un Caribe donde no se dió el fenómeno colonial de las plantaciones antillanas; en el que la población multi étnica se caracteriza por el peso de la población de ascendencia africana y centenas de miles de pobladores indigenas que se expresan en sus lenguas que sobreviven; en fin un Caribe que logró romper el pacto colonial muy temprano con la independencia de Cartagena de Indias en 1811.Todos rasgos que lo explican y diferencian frente a “otros” Caribes.
Alberto Abello Vives, era, investigador, escritor y gestor cultural. Experto en el Caribe con larga trayectoria académica. Dirigió el Observatorio del Caribe Colombiano y la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango. Creo la maestría en Desarrollo y Cultura y el Laboratorio de Innovación en Cultura y Desarrollo de la Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar. Autor y editor de libros, entre ellos “La isla encallada”; “Un Caribe sin plantación”, “El Caribe en la nación colombiana” y “Los Desterrados del Paraiso”.
La Asociación de Estudios Caribeños, asociación profesional e independiente, que reune intelectuales caribeños del mundo entero, dedicada a la promoción de los estudios caribeños, lamenta profudamente su repentina partida. Trabajador e intelectual caribeño, nos acompañó estos dias previos, de la 44ava Conferencia de la Asocacion de estudios del Caribe, que tendra lugar en Santa Marta los dias 3 al 7 de Junio de 2019. junto con sus colegas. Nos deja un gran exponente de la actividad intelectual de académicos colombianos que aporta una rica produccion y extensa produccion intelectual a los estudios del Gran Caribe (incluyendo Centroamérica y las Costas Caribeñas de Suramérica). Le rendiremos un gran y sentido homenaje.

C’est avec une immense tristesse que nous vous informons du décès, le dimanche 14 avril, de l’intellectuel de Santa Marta, Alberto Abello Vives. Alberto allait inaugurer la 44ème Conférence de l’Association d’Études Caribéennes avec pour thématique “De quoi parlons nous lorsque nous parlons de Caraïbe colombienne ?”
Sa conférence avait pour but d’amener l’auditoire à examiner la complexité de la Caraïbe colombienne ; région d’un pays pluri-régional doté d’un vaste territoire tant continental qu’insulaire et maritime ; une Caraïbe exempte du phénomène colonial des plantations antillaises et dont la population multi-ethnique se caractérise par le poids démographique de ses afro-descendants et des centaines de milliers d’autochtones s’exprimant dans leurs langues, qui survivent. Enfin, une Caraïbe qui s’est opposée très tôt au pacte colonial, avec l’indépendance de Cartagena de Indias dès 1811. Autant de traces qui l’expliquent et la différencient des “autres” Caraïbes.
Alberto était économiste et expert caribéaniste et culturaliste. Titulaire d’une Maîtrise d’Études Caribéennes près l’Université Nationale, son ample parcours l’a mené à l’Observatoire de la Caraïbe colombienne, dont il fut le premier directeur et coordinateur de la publication Aguaita y la Cátedra del Caribe. Il passa aussi par l’organisation de la Fondation Nouveau Journalisme Ibéroaméricain, que Garcia Marquez avait établie à Cartagena pour offrir des ateliers aux journalistes en devenir venus de tout le continent. Puis, Doyen de la Faculté des Sciences Économiques de l’Université Technologique de Bolivar, il lança un Laboratoire de Culture et Développement, ainsi qu’un parcours de master portant sur la même thématique. De même, il organisa l’Expédition Padilla avec l’armée nationale et la mairie de Cartagena, comme acte de reconnaissance de la contribution du général José Padilla à l’indépendance de la Colombie caribéenne. En tant que Directeur Général de la Bibliothèque Luis Angel Arango et du Réseau des Bibliothèques de la Banque de la République, il s’est occupé avec Mercedes Barcha de gérer la donation au profit de cette bibliothèque, de la collection des premières éditions des oeuvres de Gabriel Garcia Marquez dans différents pays et langues.
Auteur et éditeur d’ouvrages et revues, dont “La isla encallada”, “Un Caribe sin plantación”, “El Caribe en la nación colombiana”, “Los Desterrados del Paraiso” et Aguaita, revue de l’Observatoire de la Caraïbe colombienne. Ses recherches sur les carnavals et la fête républicaine dans la Caraïbe colombienne, demeurent inédites. Alberto nous lègue ses idées, ses livres, ainsi que son enthousiasme à l’heure d’entreprendre tout projet afférent à la culture et aux études caribéennes.
