FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

Brooklyn College of the City University of New York (CUNY) invites applications for a full-time/tenured position in Latinx Studies in the Department of Puerto Rican & Latino Studies starting date in August 2023. The senior hire will have a social science background with specialties including but not limited to Afro-latinidad, Indigeneity, urban studies, neo-liberalism, decolonization, climate change, migration, gender, race, sexuality, class and their intersections. The successful candidate will be a tenured senior scholar, an advanced associate or full professor, with a research and publication agenda situated in ethnic studies and related fields and with experience developing new curricula, advising student majors, administering research programs, mentoring junior faculty and/or other leadership functions. In addition to scholarship, the candidate will teach introductory to advanced level major courses including research seminars, and contribute with service to the department and campus community.

Founded in 1970 through student activism, the Department of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies offers majors and minors in Puerto Rican & Latinx Studies, a minor in Latin American Studies, and double majors and concentration tracks in Bilingual Education through a partnership with the Brooklyn College School of Education (Department of Childhood, Bilingual & Special Education). The students enrolled in the department’s courses, whether majors, minors or concentrations, are primarily working class and represent a vast array of Latin American and Caribbean backgrounds. The department’s mission, unlike traditional research-centered departments, carries a community and civic focus, with students, faculty and alum participating actively in the life of the department.

Brooklyn College serves students from as many as 150 countries who speak over 100 languages and dialects and thus constitutes a vibrant microcosm of the rich diversity and energy that characterizes the borough of Brooklyn and the greater New York City area itself. Its mission features “a special commitment to educate immigrant and first-generation college students from the diverse communities that make up our city and state.” The college ethos is strongly invested in the educational and career success of our diverse students. We are committed to fostering a spirit of camaraderie and shared ideals.  By accessing a first-class and affordable college education in an inclusive and nurturing intellectual milieu, our students acquire the skills, confidence, and global mindedness that allow them to thrive in a rapidly changing, unpredictable marketplace of ideas that is increasingly mindless of borders and spans cultures and vernaculars.

To this end, the college seeks faculty who are eager to engage with the diversity of our student body and have a demonstrated commitment to inclusion and heterogeneity through teaching, research and/or service. We seek to recruit and retain faculty who reflect the mosaic of our student population.  Successful candidates will bring their unique creativity, sensitivity, insights and perspectives to a community that welcomes innovation and promotes excellence in scholarship and teaching. Together we will model the finest that a public urban liberal arts, sciences, and professional studies college can be for the present and future.
