The Department of Social Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Criminology: Race, Racialization, and Crime at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, to commence July 1, 2021. This opportunity is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (for example Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). A PhD in Criminology or a related interdisciplinary program is required. We are seeking a critical, interdisciplinary scholar whose theoretical and/or empirical research focuses on the area of race, racialization, and crime. Qualified candidates will have an active research agenda in this area, and be expected to have publications appropriate to their stage of career, and provide evidence of excellence or the promise of excellence in undergraduate teaching, including an ability to teach in an interdisciplinary program. Priority will be given to scholars attending to anti-black racism in Canadian criminal justice contexts. Areas of scholarship may include: policing; colonialism; urban crime; youth crime; carceral politics and/or abolitionism; critical race theory; or other areas that demonstrate the intersection of racialization and criminalization.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications); presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong letters of reference.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the existing Criminology program curriculum, as well as develop courses in their area of expertise. Preference will be given to candidates with strength in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning.
Evidence of excellence, or promise of excellence, in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
