19th Conference on Theology in the Caribbean Today

CALL FOR PAPERS
19TH Conference on Theology in the Caribbean Today
[SURINAME 2018]
Paramaribo, Suriname, June 11-15, 2018
Theme: “Laudato Si”: Caribbean Responses

In keeping with the theme of SURINAME 2018 “Laudato Si”: Caribbean Responses, the Conference on Theology in the Caribbean Today (CTCT) sends out this call for papers to theologians, pastors, pastoral workers, scholars, theology students, activists and other persons interested in exploring the relationship between theological reflection, religious activities and the everyday experience of Caribbean peoples.

Because of their physical location Caribbean islands are considered disaster hotspots most vulnerable to devastating storms and hurricanes and the potential adverse effects of climate change and sea-level rise, including greater coastal flooding and damage to shorelines.

The recent catastrophic impact of hurricanes and tropical storms on the region [David in Dominica, 1979; Gilbert in Jamaica,1988; Ivan in Grenada, 2004; Tomas in St. Lucia, 2010; Erika and Maria in Dominica,2015 & 2017; Irma in the Lesser Antilles, 2017], coupled with rising sea levels, indiscriminate plastic waste disposal, deforestation and other environmental challenges, all make Pope Francis’ call to action on climate change in Laudato Si’ poignantly relevant. Likewise, the Paris Agreement at the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in France, December 2015.

This call is for abstracts of papers on ecology and spirituality, theology and the environment, climate change, the survival and rights of indigenous peoples, or any other area of research involving theological reflection on our Caribbean reality today.

Abstracts may be submitted for individual presentations or panel presentations. The deadline for submission of abstracts is April 11, 2018. Please submit your abstracts to the conference secretariat, Ms. Bernadette Salandy (faberns45@gmail.com).
