Film and Visual & Performing Arts – Call for Proposals.

The CSA 2016 Film and Visual & Performing Arts Committee invites proposals from filmmakers, visual and performing artists, and scholars and graduate students to submit proposals for films and other visual modes of expression—as well as papers about films and the visual arts—that engage the CSA 2016 conference theme: Caribbean Global Movements – People, Ideas, Culture, Arts and Economic Sustainability. Please be advised that for the 2016 conference, there will be two tracks as part of this committee: 1) Film Track (Chair: Angela Roe | aroe.csa@gmail.com) 2) Visual Arts and Performance Track (Chair: Gina Athena Ulysse | perftrack2016@gmail.com).

The chairs seek to recognize Caribbean cultural production in its myriad forms beyond papers to include presentations that reflect explicitly artistic and expressive modalities.

For almost a decade, the CSA Film Track has been a vital part of the CSA annual conference, and over the years it increased greatly, involving feature films, documentaries and short films concerning the region, as well as film-based events and lectures pertaining to cinematography, individual films, and the film industry. For 2016, we would like to expand the genre of the short film, as to include the music video as a reflective visual art form that not only entertains but also informs, critiques and inspires our Caribbean communities. We will maintain rigor in our selection process and ask for submission of recent films, and in particular, ones that speak to the overall conference theme.

The Visual Arts and Performance Track invites submissions of unique proposals that engage this year’s theme in bold and innovative ways. Whether in accord or discord to the outlined thematics, submissions to the art and performance track are expected to create spaces and extend our dialogues in expressive ways beyond the discursive. Artists and performers should keep in mind that we have limited accommodations in terms of both space and time slots. We will only accept a few works for presentation. Given our restrictions, we are best suited to present works with low-tech needs. We appreciate your understanding and look forward to your contributions. Additionally, the track will host “Manifesto Rasanblaj” sessions (amount TBD) over the course of the conference (shout-out Encuentro). We invite members who are activists, academics, artists, dissenters and performers to consider delivering 5mins (only) manifestos on a topic (in connection to theme of the conference) they are not just passionate about but feel compelled to have their say.

We invite 250 word abstracts (and if available, links to film trailers/clips or video/images of performance and art); please use the guidelines for panel/paper proposals listed in the General Call for Papers.

Submit the proposals by November 15, 2015 through the CSA Conference website (not via email). Be sure to identify the track you are submitting to on the submission form. If you have any questions, please contact the chairs of the related track, or contact the Program Co-Chairs at program.chair@caribbeanstudiesassociation.org.
