The Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) Expresses Solidarity with Caribbean Nations Affected by Hurricane Melissa
The Caribbean Studies Association (CSA) extends heartfelt condolences and solidarity to the governments and peoples of Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic, who have been gravely impacted by Hurricane Melissa, one of the most powerful and destructive storms to affect the region in recent memory.
We mourn with those who have lost loved ones, homes, and livelihoods. The devastation across our Caribbean archipelago reminds us of both the shared vulnerability and the deep resilience that define our region. The CSA stands in full support of all ongoing national and regional efforts toward relief, recovery, and rebuilding.
We offer a special word of comfort to Jamaica, which has suffered catastrophic destruction and faces an arduous road to recovery. The images of shattered communities, uprooted lives, and widespread loss weigh heavily on us all. Yet, we affirm our faith in the indomitable Jamaican spirit — the same spirit that has, time and again, transformed adversity into strength and renewal.
As scholars, cultural workers, and advocates of Caribbean unity, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting our regional partners through research, advocacy, and collaboration in the coming months and years. The CSA encourages all members and friends of the Caribbean to extend their assistance, whether through donations, volunteer efforts, or academic and community-based initiatives that promote recovery and healing.
Together, we will rebuild. Together, we will rise.
