Inaugural Caribbean Prime Ministers Conference
Michael Manley Centennial
An International Conference on
Decolonization, Ideology and Global Polity
The UWI, Mona Campus, Kingston, Jamaica
December 3-5, 2024
The 20th century Caribbean has produced seminal figures who straddle the world political
stage. One such figure was Michael Manley. His work as a political leader, political thinker,
anti-racism advocate and international statesman, made him in the last quarter of the 20th
century a world figure of note. Grappling with the specificities and historical problems of
decolonization in the conjuncture of global cold war politics, Manley advocated for a New International Economic Order, posited conceptions of equality, sovereignty, forms of non-alignment and participatory democracy. He advocated these political ideas both domestically and globally. To commemorate, critique, as well as debate the political ideas and work of Manley, the Faculty of Social Sciences, The University of the West Indies (Mona Campus) and The Watson Institute of International Affairs, Brown University, invite papers and panels to an international conference on the work, ideas and political practices of Michael Manley and his times.
