1825 | 2025: Restitisyon ak Reparasyon
The Haitian Studies Association considers the interconnected themes of restitisyon [restitution] and reparasyon [reparation] to mark the bicentennial of the 1825 indemnity France imposed on Haiti as retribution for its political independence and the liberation of its people.
We welcome submissions that engage historical calls for reparative justice for plantation slavery, its legacies, and more recent calls for restitutive measures for state finances taken in exchange for recognition of Haitian sovereignty. Multidisciplinary approaches to reparation and restitution, highlighting Haitian refusals, resistance, and defense of independence and sovereignty, will contribute to our arrival at a future rooted in Haitian epistemologies, self-determination, and core values of equality and freedom f
or all.
