CALL FOR PAPERS: Celebrating the Powerful Women’s Voices of the Hispanophone Caribbean and the Diaspora

The Association of Caribbean Women Writers and Scholars (ACWWS) invites submissions for an upcoming issue of its journal. MaComère is a refereed journal that is devoted to scholarly studies and creative works by and about Caribbean women in the region and the diaspora. It is the flagship publication for ACWWS, an international organization founded in 1994. MaComère is published annually.

In 2025, ACWWS will publish its first bilingual issue, dedicated to celebrating and exploring the diverse voices of women authors from the Hispanophone Caribbean and its Diaspora. These writers often grapple with a range of issues reflective of their diverse cultural, historical and social landscapes. Their writings frequently highlight the complexities of identity, politics, and human experiences across different times and regions. This bilingual issue of MaComère will provide a platform for scholarly and creative works that explore some key issues prevalent in the works of writers, scholars, and activists from the region.

Subthemes for Submission:

  1. Resistance and Empowerment: How Latina writers of Caribbean heritage use literature as a tool for political and personal empowerment.
  2. Identity and Belonging: Explorations of cultural identity, race, and the sense of belonging.
  3. Intergenerational Narratives: The representation of generational trauma, memory, and heritage.
  4. Gender, Sexuality, and Feminism: Critical approaches to gender roles, feminist thought, and LGBTQ+ narratives.
  5. Migration and Diaspora: Writings reflecting on the immigrant experience, exile, and transnational identities.
  6. Spirituality and Tradition: The role of faith, spirituality, and cultural traditions in shaping women’s narratives.
  7. Afro-Latina Experiences: The intersection of Afro-Latina and Caribbean identities and their unique contributions to literature.
  8. Environmental Justice and Narratives of the Land: Writing on ecologicalconcerns, land, and environmental justice.

  10. Historical Reimagining: Rewriting and reclaiming history through Caribbean Latina perspectives.
  11. Dictatorship and Political Repression: A critique of authoritarian regimes, censorship, and human rights violations. The “literature of dictatorship” can interrogate themes of exile, oppression, suppression of freedom, and political resistance.
  12. Speculative Fiction, Magical Realism and the Blurring of Reality: Speculative fiction, magic realism and other literary modes that blend the fantastical with the everyday, often to reflect on historical trauma, political corruption, or social inequalities.
