Black Diversities Virtual Seminar, 31 January 2025
You are invited to a Black Diversities Virtual Seminar on 31st January 2025 at 9am EST / 10am AST organised by Dr. Alison McLetchie, South Carolina State University, and Dr. Shelene Gomes, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine campus.
In this virtual seminar, we aim to present perspectives and experiences from the periphery of the Black Atlantic and Indian Ocean that center the ambivalence of rigid racial classifications in the making of modern subjectivities. Figures such as the ‘Dougla’ and ‘Hak Gwai’ for example, signal a lived multiculturalism that can challenge the monolithic categorization of Blackness in the Caribbean and Asia. Foregrounding modern historical conditions, in this seminar we aim to highlight the diversity within the contemporary Black experience with a focus on multiculturalism, political solidarities, and social histories. Speakers include academics, activists, and journalists working in and on the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, and the USA.
