Associate Editor for African and Black Diaspora: An International Journal

African and Black Diaspora is seeking to appoint up to two additional Associate Editors who will amplify the journal’s visibility across geographical and cultural contexts. We are looking for scholars who can leverage their presence in local and partner institutions, as well as their professional networks, to enhance the journal’s reach. The roles will begin in early 2026 and the term of office is three years in the first instance, renewable for additional one year terms by mutual agreement.

The additional Associate Editors will support the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) in cultivating a network that fosters and supports inclusion, diversity and equity. A key part of the role involves actively promoting the journal within networks and encouraging the submission of high quality papers aligned with the vision of the journal. As part of the African and Black Diaspora editorial team, the Associate Editors will play a vital role in the publication process and the success of the journal. Working collaboratively with their editorial colleagues, overseen by the EiC, the Associate Editors will help to achieve the journal’s mission by performing the following functions:

  • Support the EiC to facilitate the smooth operation of the journal.
  • Work with the EiC and other AEs to develop the strategy and direction of the journal.
  • Oversee the peer review process on selected submissions through an online peer review and submission system, including selecting and contacting reviewers, communicating with authors, managing revisions and resubmissions, and making recommendations to the EiC, ensuring that all reviewers and authors uphold the journal’s code of publishing ethics.
  • Encourage the submission of manuscripts to the journal from established researchers in the field and from promising new scholars.
  • Serve as peer reviewers when requested by fellow Associate Editors or the EiC.
  • Help to review and expand the pool of reviewers, in terms of size, topic specialty, and geographical representation.
  • Act as an ambassador for the journal, e.g. promoting the journal at conferences.
  • Participate in meetings with other members of the African and Black Diaspora editorial team as required and maintain active correspondence with the team.
  • Share emerging research topics from their regions and networks and collaborate with the wider editorial team to envision future special issues, which may include acting as Guest Editors for those issues

These roles are a great opportunity for academics with a strong background in research involving issues of power, knowledge, gender, race or other forms of social identity as they relate to the African diaspora, and who have the commitment, drive and ability to help develop the journal. The roles come with a modest honorarium and involves dedication, energy and focus. Becoming the Associate Editor of a journal is a rewarding and fulfilling experience where you can draw on and build your own networks, develop and promote research in the fields of African Studies and Diaspora Studies, and be recognised as a leading figure within the academic community.

African and Black Diaspora is committed to ensuring diversity, equity and inclusion across the editorial team, Editorial Board, reviewer network and decision making processes, to represent the diverse research community working in this field. In these roles, the Associate Editors will work closely with authors from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds to bring a range of scholarly voices and perspectives to publication. Candidates must hold a PhD in a relevant discipline, but applications are welcome from scholars at all stages of their career. Applicants based in Africa are strongly encouraged to apply.

The journal is also recruiting for an Editor-in-Chief, following the sad passing of EiC Dr Martin L. Boston.
