Religion, Race, and Ethnicity in the Contemporary Americas

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Department of Religious Studies and the Interdisciplinary Program in Africana Studies invite applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Religion, Race, and Ethnicity in the Contemporary Americas to begin August 2020. PhD in a relevant field and teaching experience are preferred, but ABDs in the final stages of completing their dissertations will be considered. We particularly welcome applicants who specialize in African-American religions or religions of the African diaspora in any region within the Americas. Applicants with other specializations will be expected to show the ability to teach Africana Studies courses. We are open to a wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches, including comparative, ethnographic, historical, literary, political, sociological, theological, and theoretical, as well as ethics and social justice, gender theory, globalization or diaspora studies, and media studies. This position has a 2-2 teaching load to be split evenly between Religious Studies and Africana Studies. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University.
