    Dear CSA member,

In 2012 we would like to make the book drive in Guadeloupe an even bigger success. The CSA executive therefore encourages each member to bring at least one book from their discipline to be donated to local Guadeloupe schools. These books can be current or slightly older editions of textbooks you use in your classroom teaching. Despite the official language of Guadeloupe being French most people also speak Creole. Books in any language are appreciated because many students are trying to learn English and Spanish. New books will help Guadeloupian young people practice their foreign language reading skills.

At the Guadeloupe conference there will be an area set up where you can drop off the books. At the end of the conference the Executive Council will announce in the business meeting just how many books we were able to turn over in 2012. I am sure this effort will really make you feel good about doing something at the local level for students.

    Cheers

    Dear CSA Presenters

The CSA President and Executive Council have made it a priority to help our members communicate across languages during the 2012 conference.  We have worked hard to provide translation for most, if not all, of the presentations in French and Spanish and have arranged translation from English into French for all of the plenaries. Please make use of these opportunities which are being facilitated both by professional translators who come at no small cost to CSA and by the noble volunteer efforts of your fellow CSA members who are giving of their time to help make the conference as inclusive as possible and a site of true cross-regional and linguistic exchange.  For those of you presenting in English, we ask again that you consider preparing a handout with the key points of your presentation translated into French and/or Spanish. While not perfect, Google Translate can be a relatively easy way to do this.

With the conference coming up next week, we request that those who will be presenting in languages other than English (and those on plenary panels) please forward to the translation team for the conference a copy of your paper or an abstract of it or any PowerPoint slides you plan on using. You may send such materials to: Ms. Annick Benjamin at ajbenjamin3535@gmail.com. Please clearly indicate your name, paper title, date, time and place of your presentation.  (You may consult the program, which is online, if you are in need of any of this information.)

Please do send any materials you have ready this week so that Ms. Benjamin and her team can prepare for their task of translating your work for your audience members.  In addition, you must bring a hard copy of your paper, abstract or PowerPoint slides with you to the conference. We will have a box set up at registration where you can deposit these materials. Again, please be sure to indicate clearly your name and paper title and what day, time and place your presentation will be held so that the translators can keep track of the materials.

Finally, please do join us on Wednesday morning for our breakfast meeting from 7:30-9:30 (place TBA) to share thoughts and ideas on these efforts at making CSA a space that truly represents the rich diversity of the Caribbean.

    Respectfully yours,

The Trans-lingual CSA Working Group (TWG)

    Sinceramente,

El Grupo de Trabajo por una CSA Trans-lingue (TWG)
